We don't cover Apple computers normally, however during 2011 the turning tide has occured. For the longest time Apple has had the notion and the truth that you were safe from Viruses, malware etc because of there small market share and the large numbers of Windows machines in the world and there dominance, so they were the primary and only target for bad guys.
But now that is no longer the case sometime during this year the change and additional shift to focus on Macs seems to occured for a few reasons but the top two reason seem to be this:
1. The market share for Apple computers has been increasing over the last few years as more people buying Apple PC's and has now reached the good enough numbers for the bad guys to now target.
2. Microsoft and Windows users have been addressing the security issues in Windows now for at least a decade and our systems are getting patched, being kept current and with the latest versions of Windows like Vista and Windows 7 its tougher for the bad guys to infect Windows systems like they used too. So now they have moved the target to Apple PC's which have not had the experience in securing there Desktop OS like Windows users had and targeted 3rd party programs like Adobe Reader, Flash, etc. these will include the Apple desktop versions of these programs
A Apple Desktop OS rootkit has been developed and on the internet and in the wild this year,
we are seeing increasing development of Viruses, Malware and attack for the Apple desktop OS platform. Like "Apple Defender" which occured earlier this year and bit a lot of Apple users. Just in the last few weeks more attacks have been developed and in the news, the developement activity seems to be on the rise and occuring more quickly now.
What can you do if your a Apple computer users to keep your system infection free? Follow the same advice as the Windows users have had to learn, you can read our tips article "Securing your PC..."
